when rappaport sold the boutique
in 1999, there was so much demand for the fragrance that she decided
to continue the fragrance line as a separate company.

Tropical Escape
Even Kai creator Gaye Stranza
Rappaport was surprised by the craze that ensued when she launched
her gardenia-based perfume six years ago. Its rollerball applicator
was one of the first for a high-end fragrance. "People liked
the portability," Rappaport says. "They could carry it with
them for an instant pick-me-up." Now her blend, found in the
pockets of celebrities from Ellen Pompeo to Tommy Lee ("Apparently
his mother grew gardenia in her yard, and it takes him back to his
childhood," Rappaport says), is available in spray form (at right).
"A lot of my clients prefer a traditional spritz formula, and
they begged me to make one," Rappaport says. "Buit it took
three years since mists tend to be lighter thatn oils and I wanted
to preserve the integrity of the original." Her dedication pais
off. Kai (Havaiian for "ocean") "smells exaclty like
an island holiday," she says. "Who wouldn't want to be reminded
of that?

I'm Obsessed with... Kai Body Buffer
For a beauty director, I'm
surprisingly low-maintenance, except for my 20-minute shower routine.
I couldn't give it up until I came across a bath gel-infused sponge
by Kai. The antibacterial synthetic "loofah" dispenses coconut-oil
cleanser while I buff away for up to 60 washes. The creamy suds double
as a shaving prep, and the divinely sexy gardenia scent lingers. I'm
now out of the shower in less than 3 minutes- but my good mood lasts
all day! - Gwen Flamberg, beauty director.
